This survey is designed to measure religiosity more accurately than the existing survey questions commonly used in the East and the West, with special attention to distinctly East Asian characteristics that are quintessentially universal in the globalizing world. We hope the questions will allow for comparisons of religiosity across cultures or societies.
2. Besides these common questions on major aspects of religiosity, each survey team(Korea, Japan, and Taiwan) may add some questions about beliefs and practices that are unique but important to a particular society.
3. Translation into CJK (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) should be as close to the English version as possible, but it does not need to be strictly literal. Each survey team will ensure the idiomatic or best possible translation into that language and society.
4. Some questions provide examples for the respondent to think broadly in case "religion" may be narrowly understood in a society. The illustrative examples are not exhaustive. Each language/society may use different examples and may include only the relevant examples.
5. There are 80 questions. There will be more than 80 variables because some questions have multiple answer options that are variables. We have minimized open-ended questions, but there are a few, especially for the name of a minor religion or new religion.
